A differential lock, as the name suggests, is a differential locking mechanism used to lock an inter-wheel differential (between the left and right half-axles) or an inter-axle differential (between the front and rear drive axles) to cope with a situation where one or more wheels lose traction and cannot be released.
With a normal differential, the left and right wheels are allowed to turn at different speeds, but when one of the wheels is idling, the other wheel on a good road surface is also deprived of torque and the car loses its driving dynamics. In this case, the differential does not work. In order for the two wheels to be linked together, power can be transferred to at least one side of the wheel so that the car gets the power to drive and thus gets out of trouble. This has led to the development of various differential locking mechanisms.
The differential lock is released by releasing the throttle, letting the vehicle run at low speed (generally no more than 5 km/h) or stopping, pressing the differential lock switch back into position and turning the wheel slightly at the same time, after the indicator light has gone off, the differential lock is released. The differential lock must be released immediately after the vehicle is released, otherwise the half-shaft will be damaged.
The differential lock is used in slippery road conditions (e.g. ice, sand and mud) to prevent the drive wheels from slipping. The inter-wheel differential lock is used to lock the inter-wheel differential on the rear axle. The inter-wheel differential lock switch is located on the function switch panel in the middle of the instrument panel.
Cautions on the use of the differential lock.
1. It must only be used when the vehicle is passing through muddy roads and the wheels are skidding or stranded.
2. The vehicle should be at a stop or at a speed equivalent to walking speed before the inter-axle differential lock rocker switch is pressed.
3、After passing through the muddy road, the inter-axle differential lock seesaw switch should be closed in time, otherwise it will increase the driving resistance of the car, and the car speed will not improve the fuel consumption.
4、After closing the inter-axle differential lock rocker switch, the inter-axle differential lock buzzer should stop alarming. When the buzzer is still alarming, you should stop the car to check and find out the reason, so that the inter-axle differential lock is really off before driving.
5. To ensure that the vehicle has good passing performance, the inter-axle differential lock should be checked and maintained regularly.
